List of Stock Exchanges

Stocks are listed in the national markets New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the American Stock Exchange (AMEX)} or in the regional markets or both. If stocks are not registered in these markets they can be negotiated through the NASDAQ-OTC market.

The New York Stock Exchange – NYSE, also called “The Great Blackboard,” is the biggest market and the oldest of all in the United States. It has the most complete lists and the most demanding requirements to be included in the list. In addition to keep these market registration controls it is expected that listed companies meet certain regulations given by the Securities and Exchange Commissions (SEC). Controls such as three month term and annual reports, as well as giving some information concerning the companies’ current operations and any issue that could affect its good performance.

Companies that do not comply or not meet the control standards maybe filed out. Normally the largest, more recognized and the financially safest companies including all those that comply with requirements are listed in the NYSE.

When a buying or selling order is presented to buy stocks from a company listed in the NYSE, the agent or registered representative communicate that order through electronic means to the negotiation floor. The order then is taken to the exchange post for the respective stocks., where a specialist carries on the order. Later through the automatic electronic market price indicator the transaction is communicated to the rest. These are showed on TV channels (News, or stock market oriented shows.) After placing your buying or selling stock orders, you receive the confirmation of it been done through your stock agent. The number of stocks that are negotiated in the NYSE is constantly increasing through time and since 2000 in exceeds the billion stocks per day.

The American Stock Exchange (AMEX) is less severe in what requirements to be listed refers to than the NYSE, and it generally has new and smaller companies listed. Besides stocks, markets have added to their negotiations options, stock indexes, exchange trade funds (ETFs).

AMEX as NYSE have an authentic negotiation floor, so that NASDAQ can make electronic negotiations. AMEX uses a system with specialists as NYSE does. Stocks from a company can be listed in the NYSE, in AMEX and in various regional markets.
