How to Find Investment Leads
After a good while has been spent talking to a very good investment person, who in most cases will be a scientist or an executive, it is then easy to see if a particular company might be somewhat thrilling. This is when some people then start their investigation.
There are a number of things that should be avoided when trying to find a growth stock. It is not a good idea to go up to someone in the management at this phase of the search. Another thing that is simply a waste of time and is not recommended is to not spend hours upon hours looking over old annual reports and doing intricate studies of small year by year modifications in the balance sheets. Something else you should avoid is asking each stockbroker you know what his opinion is about a certain stock. What you can do nonetheless is look over the balance sheet in order to be able to settle on the nature of the capitalization and economic situation. If there is a SEC brochure you should look over very carefully the parts that cover breakdown of total sales by product lines, degree of officer, any other big ownership of common stock, competition, all the earning statement figures that shed light on depreciation or on depletion if there is any, the profit margins, unusual or non recurring costs in the previous years of operation, as well as the amount of research that is done on activity.
After this is done you can then roll your sleeves up to start working. This is when it is then a good idea to use the powers one has for investigating by finding out gossip or as more commonly placed scuttlebutt. In this case instead of a source of original ideas for investment is where the people that one knows can actually serve as a wonderful help. Try to look for each essential customer, supplier, ex-employee, competitor or a scientist that is in the related field that you know and that you will be able to approach easily since you already know the person well. Alright, you say, but what happens to those of us who do not know anybody in the field who will fill me in with the needed background, what should a person do in this case?
One thing to keep in mind is that even the investors that do know people in the related field still do not obtain a lot of the information they require of, therefore in this case what can be done is simply to stop the investigation in this way and try a different approach. In order to make a lot of cash on investments it is not necessary to get an answer to every investment that one is considering. What you do need to try to obtain though is the right answer as much as possible in the few times that actual buying is done. Because of this, if there is simply not any way to get a lot of the background and it does not seem that there will be a good opportunity for a good deal, most likely the smart thing to do in this case is place the issue on the back burner and move on to something new.
